Biography

Philip Jensen is a nuclear/mechanical engineer at PNNL. His current work includes mechanical testing of spent fuel surrogates, studying how spent fuel cooling rate effects radial hydride formation in zirconium alloy cladding, studying the deposition of corrosive contaminants on spent nuclear fuel canisters, and finite element modeling of nuclear fuel. His past work includes supporting full scale multi-mode transportation testing of real fuel assemblies with surrogate fuel. This work consisted of shipping instrumented surrogate fuel assemblies in an instrumented shipping cask and conveyance, with 70 channels of acceleration and strain data continuously recorded during transport. This testing included road, rail, barge, and transatlantic shipments. He is also experienced in developing complex structural finite element models of spent nuclear fuel during storage and transportation (e.g. implicit, explicit-dynamics). This includes road and rail transport, and packaging drop models. He has also developed models to predict the risk of canister degradation during extend interim storage, developed deposition models for estimating canister surface contaminant concentration, and supported site surveys of shutdown reactors in order to assess the current state of infrastructure at the site to support large scale transportation of spent nuclear fuel. He has extensive knowledge of existing spent nuclear fuel storage and transportation systems, and is deeply involved with the spent fuel community. Mr. Jensen has also worked in industry analyzing nuclear fuel. He worked as a Mechanical Analysis engineer at Framatome (formerly AREVA), where he performed complex structural dynamics analysis of nuclear fuel. He has also worked with novel fuel forms, performed thermal analysis of fuel, and studied fuel fluid structure interaction.
